What Paramount say

“Motorola's official description above contains a lot of spin and, at times, bad recommendations. Let's analyse this further to see how the XT420 really holds up. First of all you need to remember that this is a licence free radio so, although you don't need to own a radio licence in order to use this radio, you are leaving yourselves open to receiving interference from other like minded radio users. These include anyone from kids to local minicab companies. Licence free radios generally only pump out half the power of a fully licenced radio therefore the coverage you will get will be shorter.

Whilst Motorola are correct that this radio can be used for business purposes, we certainly wouldn't recommend using them in "high noise harsh conditions" as they simply won't stand up. Nor should you use them on construction sites as Motorola mention. Do you really want to be talking to a crane operator using the same frequency as a couple of kids who are playing in the park? This could be extremely dangerous and we recommend any construction site worker to use a fully licenced radio instead.

Some of the spin mentioned above includes "operates without subscription or call charges" - this is not a feature of this radio alone. ALL radios can boast this. They also mention that it has "219 user selectable provacy codes," whilst this is no doubt a feature it is completely redundant for 99% of the people who will be buying this radio. What we can say however is that this is a well built product (as you would expect from Motorola) and will do a good job for personnel or light business use. The price is a little high and there are certainly more cost effective options available in the licence free market but, so long as you do not use this in demanding environments, this product should do a good job for you."
